Formative Feedback of Teaching: Enhancing Learning Through Student Feedback

Formative feedback provides instructors with timely insights into student learning experiences and opportunities to make adjustments during a course. This interactive session explores the role of formative and mid-term feedback in supporting student learning and making teaching more responsive. Participants will explore approaches for gathering, interpreting, and responding to formative feedback and will work on practical formative feedback strategies to identify actionable changes that can enhance learning while a course is still in progress.

Session Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Describe the purpose and value of formative (mid-term) feedback in supporting student learning and teaching effectiveness.
Apply practical feedback strategies to gather and interpret student feedback.
Identify ways to respond to feedback and communicate changes to students to enhance the learning experience.

Grading involves more than assigning marks. Teaching Assistants regularly make decisions about student work while navigating expectations from course instructors, concerns about fairness and consistency, student needs and uncertainty about assessment criteria, and more.

What does fair and consistent grading actually mean? How can we apply grading rubrics consistently across different students and assignments, especially when student work doesn't fit neatly into the assessment criteria?

Join us for the next TA Teaching Exchange session, where we'll explore authentic grading dilemmas, consider different perspectives, and discuss possible approaches to navigating these challenges. Through case-based discussions, we'll reflect on the complexities of grading, share experiences, and learn from one another.

There are no single “right” answers—just opportunities to think critically about our grading practices and develop greater confidence in making fair, consistent, and context-sensitive decisions.

Graduate instructors and Teaching Assistants from all disciplines and levels of teaching experience are welcome. No preparation is required.

AI and Accessibility: From fear to values-based teaching

Accessibility and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) bring new ways of learning and teaching to higher education. While these areas present different challenges and opportunities, both invite educators to reflect on their values, question their assumptions, and consider how to move forward in the face of unfamiliar situations, emerging complexities, and tensions between their beliefs and teaching practices.

This interactive workshop invites participants to examine their own values in teaching and learning and explore how these values shape their approaches to meeting the evolving landscape of education and needs of students. Through reflective activities, hypothetical faculty member profiles, and scenario-based discussions, participants will explore how different values, perspectives, and priorities influence teaching practices and decisions. The workshop aims to deepen participants' understanding of their own values while creating space to understand why others may approach similar situations differently. Together, participants will explore ways to navigate tensions between common teaching practices, GenAI and accessibility, identifying values-informed practices that support more inclusive teaching and learning environments.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Examine their own values and beliefs about teaching and learning, particularly in relation to GenAI and accessibility in higher education.
Reflect on how their values align with their current teaching practices and decisions concerning GenAI and accessibility.
Analyze hypothetical faculty member profiles and teaching scenarios to explore how different values, perspectives, and priorities influence approaches to GenAI and accessibility.
Identify values-informed approaches and practices through collective reflection and discussion that support accessibility and reflect on GenAI in higher education.

Workshop Inspiration

This workshop is inspired by Alysha and Ezgi's participation in the 2026 Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) conference. Drawing on activities and insights from pre-conference workshops and conference sessions, they have adapted selected activities and developed additional ones to create opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and collective learning.

Micro-teaching Short Course Fall 2026

The Micro-teaching Short Course is offered annually in the fall term, and is designed to give students the opportunity to plan, develop, and deliver a lesson in a mock classroom setting.

Registration deadline: Tuesday, October 27
Training session: Tuesday, November 3, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Location: Killam Library, Room B400

Micro-teaching sessions: Sessions will be held throughout November and early December. Microteaching sessions dates will be announced after the registration deadline and you can sign up for them during the training session. Each session accommodates four instructors and up to four students.

From Principles to Practice: EDIA for TAs

This workshop introduces teaching assistants (TAs) to everyday equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) practices that are practical, grounded, and doable. Rather than viewing EDIA as an add-on, participants will explore how small, intentional choices in communication, facilitation, and assessment can meaningfully shape students’ learning experiences. Through brief case-based scenarios drawn from real teaching contexts, TAs will discuss how to respond to common challenges such as classroom dynamics. We will conclude with concrete pedagogical strategies that TAs can immediately apply in their tutorials, labs, and grading, including inclusive facilitation moves, accessible lesson planning tips, and approaches to fostering welcoming and supportive learning environments.

Students who are not currently TAs are also welcome to attend, as the workshop offers valuable preparation for future teaching roles and careers in academia.
