Phil MacLean

Newfoundland and Labrador
Nominated by EastGen

Phil MacLean built a distinguished career by bringing practical determination and a solutions-first philosophy to dairy farming and agricultural leadership across Atlantic Canada. Born in Halifax in 1960, Phil pursued agriculture at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, studying agricultural business. Before building an operation of his own, he gained hands-on experience across Nova Scotia and Ontario, learning dairy, cash crop, maple syrup, swine, and mink production under experienced farm mentors. That broad foundation shaped the practical approach that would later define his career.

After moving to Newfoundland in 1986 to work as a herdsman for Hammond Farm Ltd., Phil and his wife, Pauline, began building a future of their own. In 1987, they launched Headline Holsteins with the purchase of their first two cows. Later, that grew into a modern dairy operation, and then expanded to Barn Fine Eggs, strengthening local food production and contributing to the province鈥檚 supply of fresh staples. A broiler operation, Barn Fine Brood, was subsequently established in Nova Scotia.

Operating in a challenging northern environment, Phil turned geographical obstacles into opportunities for innovation. He worked with the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Station in St. John鈥檚 to explore corn silage production under degradable biofilm, helping open new forage possibilities for Newfoundland producers. On the farm, Phil embraced milking technology, precision nutrient management, dragline manure systems, A2A2 genetics, and robotic milking systems, while achieveing complete forage self-sufficiency. He and Pauline also opened their farm to school groups, government officials, and the public through tours and Open Farm Day, helping people better understand modern agriculture and food production.

Phil鈥檚 influence extended well beyond his own farm. As an EastGen board member from 2016 to 2025 and a Semex Alliance board member from 2018 to 2024, he became a strong voice for Atlantic producers. As Semex president from 2021 to 2024, he provided international leadership during a period of rapid technological change, championing research, genomics, and collaboration while ensuring advances in genetics remained connected to farmers. He also played a pivotal role in bringing the Atlantic provinces together within the Semex partnership, including the integration of Nova Scotia Animal Breeders, giving regional producers a stronger collective voice.

As a founding board member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Dairy Cooperative, Phil has continued working to strengthen the foundation of a self-sustaining provincial dairy industry. At home, Phil and Pauline support food banks, volunteer fire departments, and local sports teams, and the mentoring of individuals pursuing careers in the agricultural industry.

Guided by his belief that 鈥渄oing nothing is not an option,鈥 Phil MacLean has spent his career turning challenges into opportunities, bringing people together, and moving Atlantic agriculture forward through innovation, cooperation, and action. His legacy reaches from a Newfoundland dairy farm to international boardrooms, with the same focus at every level: building a stronger future for producers, communities, and the industry he has served for more than four decades.
