For dozens of students at Dal AC, access to necessities like food, hygiene products and health supplies comes not from a grocery store鈥攂ut from the generosity of their campus community.

Each month last year, up to 90 students turned to the Student Food Pantry for support鈥攔elying on the year-round service for nutritious food and essential items like menstrual products, hygiene supplies and sexual health resources. Whether over the summer break or through winter holidays, the pantry remained a steady source of help, powered by a wide network of donors, student organizations, and on-campus partners.

鈥淭hanks to the incredible generosity of community partners and supporters, we鈥檝e been able to meet students鈥 needs, even during the weeks when campus is quiet,鈥 said Manager Alexe Indigo.

This past winter, the Food Pantry was able to distribute several dozen food hampers to students who remained in Truro through the holidays. These hampers, filled with nutritious and comforting items, were made possible through generous partnerships with Organic NS and the Wolfville Farmers Market.

Gratitude is extended to the many groups and individuals who have made this work possible. Food and monetary donations were generously provided by:

  • Chartwells
  • Bible Hill Fire Department
  • The Osprey Ridge neighbourhood (Bible Hill)
  • Organic NS
  • Wolfville Farmers Market
  • Colchester Food Network
  • Residents of Bible Hill
  • Dal AC faculty and staff
  • Alumni and members of our campus community

On-campus partnerships have also been vital. Collaborations with Cultiv8 provided fresh, student-grown produce and the Fin Fish Production class, led by Dr. Jim Duston, donated delicious smoked trout raised and processed by Dal AC students themselves. Several bushels of fresh apples from the campus orchards were also donated鈥攁n incredible example of local sustainability supporting local needs.

The spirit of giving and collective effort extended to student organizations as well. Many thanks to the Dal AC Rotaract Club, Dal OUTT, Dal ACTS, DASA, and the DSU Food Bank for their contributions and fundraising efforts that kept shelves stocked and spirits high.
