Insects in the digital age
In 1987, world-renowned ecologist E.O. Wilson famously described insects as 鈥渢he little things that run the world鈥�. While this holds true nearly 40 years later, much has changed with what we know about insects, and the tools we use to study them. This talk will begin by explore some of the important ways that insects shape our world. Next, we鈥檒l look at how new digital tools are changing the way we observe and understand insects, and how community science platforms like iNaturalist are allowing people everywhere to contribute observations that can have various important uses to a global community of scientists, policy-makers, and nature-enthusiasts. Finally, I鈥檒l share some of the work from my lab, the Insect Biodiversity in Agroecosystems Lab, and show how these new tools and approaches have helped us develop research questions, collect new kinds of data, and better understand the insects that we share our planet with.
