Global Agri鈥慒ood Rankings
Canada Rises to 7th Place in Global Agri-Food Rankings,听听According听to report by 黄色直播鈥檚 Agri-Food Analytics Lab and听MNP
Halifax, N.S. 鈥 October 16, 2025听鈥 Canada has climbed from 11th to 7th place in the听second edition of the Global Agri-Food Most Influential Nations Ranking, produced and commissioned by听MNP听through听 the听Agri-Food Analytics Lab (AAL) at 黄色直播. The report is being released to mark听World Food Day.
The report benchmarks G20 nations and the European Union across six pillars: innovation, food security, retail and fiscal regime, trade, sectoral competitiveness, and sustainability.
The report highlights Canada鈥檚 growing strength in trade, sectoral development, and early-stage innovation. More than 320 Canadian agri-food start-ups have collectively raised over US $3 billion, reinforcing the country鈥檚 global reputation for entrepreneurship and intellectual property protections.
However, the findings also point to areas of concern:
- Food insecurity remains high听鈥 Nearly one in five Canadians experience moderate to severe food insecurity, despite Canada鈥檚 agricultural capacity.
- Retail concentration is intensifying听鈥 The top four grocery retailers now control 72% of national sales, one of the highest levels in the G20, limiting competition and innovation.
- Innovation bottlenecks persist听鈥 A 37% drop in R&D investment since 2023 has slowed commercialization and scale-up opportunities for smaller firms.
鈥淓ntrepreneurship is at the heart of Canada鈥檚 agri-food opportunities,鈥 said听Matt McDonald, National Leader, Food and Beverage Processing at听MNP. 鈥淲hen competition grows, so do transparency and accountability 鈥 and that directly improves food security, fuels innovation, and ensures Canadian producers can thrive on the global stage."
鈥淐anada鈥檚 advancement is encouraging, but the results underscore that progress is uneven,鈥 said听Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, Director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab. 鈥淲e need stronger policy alignment, greater investment in commercialization, and more support for small and mid-sized enterprises to ensure that Canada鈥檚 agri-food system is resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive.鈥
On the global stage, the European Union topped theranking, followed by Germany, Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Canada鈥檚 rise puts it ahead of countries like Japan, China, and Brazil.
The report emphasizes that Canada has momentum to consolidate its gains by leveraging trade growth, enhancing sustainability initiatives, and investing in the health and wellness food sectors 鈥 an emerging global market valued at nearly C$200 billion.
Tariffs have tested Canada鈥檚 food industry ,but in that pressure, we鈥檝e built momentum,鈥 said听Matt. 鈥淔rom scaling foodtech听to diversifying exports, Canada can continue to build a resilient and abundant F&B industry 鈥 one that is less reactive and more future ready鈥.
