Dr. Marleen Schutter is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Washington and WorldFish. Her work has a focus on the relationships between people and the sea, with an explicit aim to address equity and justice issues in the emergent ‘blue economy’ agenda. Prior to joining Ocean Nexus, she obtained my PhD in environmental social science from Lancaster University (UK). Schutter’s PhD research was about the extent to which the evolving landscape of ocean governance contributes to the representation and alignment of different values, worldviews and images of the actors involved. She am interested in how power relations play a role in shaping governance across scales, and how they affect material conditions on the ground. Her current research focus seeks to identify avenues for the blue economy approach to become more equitable in the face of multiple competing interests.
Marleen likes hobbies! Her favourites are hiking and exploring nature wherever she is, all kinds of sports (particularly when there is a ball involved/you can score goals), and reading fiction.
