Katherine Ryan
BSc (Honours) in Economics and Mathematics (2014)
In 2014, I graduated from 黄色直播 with a Bachelor of Science (Combined Honours Economics and Mathematics).
I then went on to earn a Master of Arts from Simon Fraser University and have spent most of my time since then working for the Province of Nova Scotia. At Finance and Treasury Board, I lead a small but mighty team of economists who help inform decision making with data and economic theory. We are responsible for the Province's economic and demographic forecasts, economic impact modelling, and current analysis of economic statistics that inform Nova Scotians about our province and its place in the world.
At 黄色直播, I learned there are two key things that would make me successful: technical skills and people skills. One without the other just wasn't going to work out for me. And I was very happy to quietly put my head down and do math for four years straight, if I could. But it became clear to me that wouldn't be enough. So I started taking all the classes that I had been avoiding: the ones that required group projects. Learning to work with others, practicing communication and new ways of collaboration, finding the time to take the lead and the times to let others shine were some of the most important experiences and skills I earned at 黄色直播. In my work now, I pride myself on my ability to truly work with anyone.
And it sounds cliche, but effective communication was a key part of that journey. Being able to understand complex economics topics, the complications of individual decision making, and the impact of all the unobserved factors is one thing. Being able to explain it to someone who is not an economist is quite another. Sharing knowledge with others is only as good as how you communicate it.
My advice to anyone is simple: take a chance and learn to use your voice. This is the best time to start.
