Balsam fir Christmas trees are an important horticultural crop in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. Nova Scotia alone has more than 200 farms covering approximately 15,000 acres of land. Ober 1 million trees are harvested annually in Nova Scotia, with a significant portion being exported to other markets. Based on economic revenue, Christmas trees are a top 5 agricultural crop in our region. However, climate change and other stressors pose challenges to Atlantic Canadian producers. The overall aim for this lab is to understand balsam fir ecophysiology and use that knowledge to develop new technologies, ensuring the sustainability of this important industry.
